What is Applied Behaviour Analysis?

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding human behaviour. In ABA, we use objective evaluation, and systematic application of interventions to measure socially significant behaviour change. What is a Behaviour Analyst?

A Behaviour Analyst is a professional who practices ABA to help individuals achieve meaningful behaviour change. They assess, design, implement, and evaluate interventions tailored to specific needs. Behaviour analysts often work with the participant and other members of the participant’s support team such as parents, teachers, support workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, speech pathologists, or paediatricians. Working in a person-centred model of care, the behaviour analyst will support the participant meet their individualised goals, and is skilled to upskill members of their support team to help maintain effective programs.

What is a Certified Behaviour Analyst (CBA)?

A certified behaviour analyst (CBA) is a masters-level credential from the Association for Behaviour Analysis Australia (ABA Australia) that demonstrates that the behaviour analyst has met requirements for independent practice in Australia. To become a CBA, you must graduate from an approved masters program which provides a minimum of 270 hours of direct instruction in the science of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). Then, all trainees must complete 1500 hours of supervised fieldwork experience prior to being eligible for the CBA. 

A certified behaviour analyst - undergraduate (CBA-U) is a bachelor's-level qualification from ABAA. To become a CBA-U, the individual must graduate from a verified bachelors program with a minimum of 180 hours of direct instruction in the science of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). Then, all trainees must complete 1000 hours of supervised fieldwork experience prior to being eligible for the CBA-U.

What is the Association for Behaviour Analysis Australia (ABA Australia)?

The Association of Behaviour Analysis is a professional organisation dedicated to promoting the science and practice of ABA in Australia. It provides resources, networking opportunities and professional development to its members. Additionally, ABA Australia is the professional organisation responsible for the regulation of practitioners in the country. They are the providers of the Certified Behaviour Analyst (CBA) and CBA- Undergraduate (CBA-U) credential.

Who is Eligible to Join ABA Australia?

Membership of ABA Australia is open to individuals who are interested in or practicing ABA, including behaviour analysts, educators, researchers, and students. By joining, members gain access to valuable resources, professional development opportunities, and a supportive community.

ABA Australia maintains strict guidelines for the regulation of its members to ensure the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct within the field of Applied Behaviour Analysis. Members are required to adhere to a professional code of ethics, which outlines principles and standards for ethical behaviour, confidentiality, and client welfare. Additionally, members are encouraged to engage in continuing education and professional development activities to enhance their knowledge and skills in ABA practice.
