What Does a Behaviour Analyst Do?

Behaviour analysts are professionals who help people learn new skills and reduce behaviours that may be getting in the way of everyday life. They use evidence-based methods drawn from the science of behaviour analysis to support positive, meaningful change.

In Australia, behaviour analysts certified by Association for Behaviour Analysis Australia work with people of all ages across many settings, including homes, schools, workplaces, and community environments.

What Behaviour Analysts Can Help With?

Behaviour analysts work on behaviour, which includes how people communicate, learn, and interact with others. They may help by:

understanding why certain behaviours happen

teaching new skills, such as communication, daily living, learning, or social skills

reducing behaviours that cause distress or limit participation

supporting families, carers, educators, and staff with practical strategies

using data to check whether supports are working and making changes when needed

All work is based on observation, evidence, and ongoing review.

How Behaviour Analysts Work

Behaviour analysts:

focus on how behaviour is influenced by the environment

use positive, reinforcement-based approaches

collect and review information to guide decisions

work collaboratively with clients and those supporting them

adjust supports based on progress and outcomes

They are required to practise safely, ethically, and within their professional training and competence.

What Behaviour Analysts Do Not Do

Behaviour analysts do not:

diagnose medical, psychological, or psychiatric conditions

provide psychotherapy, counselling, or cognitive therapy

conduct psychological or speech pathology assessments

practise medicine or other regulated health professions

provide services they are not trained or competent to deliver

If a person needs support outside a behaviour analyst’s scope, referral to another qualified professional is required.

Working With Other Professionals

Behaviour analysts often work as part of a broader team. They collaborate with professionals such as psychologists, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, teachers, and medical practitioners.

When a person’s needs fall outside behaviour analysis, behaviour analysts refer to other professionals to ensure appropriate and safe care.
