Disability Rights, Human Rights, and The Professional Practice of Applied Behaviour Analysis in Australia |
Presenters Erin Leif, Monash University Russ Fox, Monash University Description Centering human rights in behaviour assessment and support represents a pivotal shift in the field of applied behaviour analysis (ABA). This presentation will examine the intersection of restrictive practices, human rights, and ABA, offering guidance to behaviour analysts and behaviour support practitioners seeking to align their practices with contemporary rights-based frameworks. Drawing on the principles outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), this presentation will underscore our ethical responsibility to prioritise and protect autonomy, dignity, and safety in behaviour analytic practice. The presenters will provide practical guidance to ensure behaviour support plans honour the preferences, strengths, and rights of individuals. Key strategies discussed will include approaches for obtaining assent, embedding personal goals, using non-aversive reactive strategies, and minimising the use of restrictive practices. Emphasis will be placed on fostering collaboration with individuals and their support networks to create interventions that are respectful, empowering, and protect and uphold human rights. By adopting this approach, behaviour analysts can uphold their ethical responsibility to promote a culture of respect and inclusion, positioning their work within contemporary human rights frameworks while enhancing the quality of life for those they support in home, school, and community-based settings.Objectives By the end of this half-day presentation, delegates will be able to;
