“Universal” Protocols: Practical Applications of Behaviour Prevention & De-Escalation Strategies for Behaviours of Concern

Presenter

Hayley Lambert, Super Kids Behavioural Consulting

Description

This workshop will outline in detail the ‘Universal Protocols’ developed by FTF Behavioral Consulting, and teach attendees when & how to practically apply these principles in the Australian clinical context. The rationale behind the use of the protocols will be discussed, including how it relates to the ABA Australia Code of Ethical Practice (Code). Attendees will have the opportunity to apply these strategies to a case study of their own, with assistance from the workshop presenter/s.

Behaviour Analysis continues to be a growing field in Australia, with more clinicians in the EIBI and PBS spaces, serving a wider range of clients with diverse needs. Our field also continues to have a fragile reputation in the disability and education sectors, with accusations of being outdated or unethical. It is therefore important for Australian clinicians to continue to develop competence in the use of modern behaviour support strategies which are in line with NDIS policies and guidelines, as well as adhering to the Code.

These protocols represent a framework for conceptualising and practically applying strategies which do just that - they are proactive, evidence-based, person-centred and focussed on reducing risk when supporting individuals with behaviours of concern. The strategies can be adapted across a range of contexts, including EIBI, PBS and school-related applications of Behaviour Analysis, with scope to benefit a range of clinicians and clients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the 7 Universal Protocols and explain the rationale behind each of them, including how they relate to the Ethical Code of Practice
  • Outline the process for implementation of the Universal Protocols
  • Distinguish when Universal Protocols are appropriate for use within EIBI, school & PBS frameworks, and select alternatives for when they are not appropriate
  • Describe how the universal protocols may inform individualised behaviour plans as well as broader behaviour prevention & de-escalation practices
  • Adapt the Universal Protocols and related principles to a client case study
