Abstract
This presentation explores the real-world implementation of Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) to identify the environmental contingencies that influence and maintain canine behaviour within the home. Emphasizing the practical translation of behavioural theory into everyday settings, the talk will examine how structured observation and assessment inform the development of individualized behaviour change plans for companion dogs.
A central theme of the discussion is the pivotal role of the dog’s caregivers, who represent the most significant aspect of the animal’s social and physical environment. Their beliefs, skills, emotional responses, consistency, and commitment profoundly shape both the expression of problem behaviours and the effectiveness of behaviour change strategies. Through this lens, the talk will highlight the collaborative nature of behaviour change processes.
A series of case studies will illustrate common behavioural issues encountered in practice, many of which are rooted in emotional states such as stress, anxiety, and fear. These examples will underscore the importance of fluency in canine body language as both an assessment tool and an essential component of effective behaviour modification. By integrating functional assessment methodology with practical strategies for caregiver engagement and education, this presentation aims to bridge the gap between behavioural science and its application in the everyday lives of companion animals and their families.
